LITERACY THROUGH THE ARTS

Model community-school artist-in-residence program

The Port Chester Council for the Arts has designed, implemented and coordinated artist-in-residency programs in the Port Chester schools since 1984 when Kinderart was established through a NYSCA grant. Literacy through the Arts (K-5) is an expansion of Kinderart. 

LTA features curriculum connected visual and perform- ing arts activities taught by professional artists working directly with Port Chester's elementary classroom teachers. This innovative collaborative program recently entered its second decade under the direction of Education Director Camille Linen, a teachers' advisory committee and 15 professional artists. 

It is the program from which National Arts in the School Day was born in 2006.
